Observations relating to the efficiency of mixing in rapid reaction flow devices.

چکیده
The principle of dimensional analysis of liquid flow has been applied to the problem of rapid mixing in flow apparatus. A model of the Hartridge-Roughton mixing chamber and observation tube has been scaled approximately 1/1.000 so that the times after mixing are approximately 6 s, the flow velocities are the order of 2 cm/s, and the distance from mixing to observation is 120 mm. Visual observation is employed to observe the end point of the mixing of acid-base with a color indicator, thymol blue. Quantitative estimates of the effect of the number of jets, the effect of screens placed in the flow stream, and the angle of jets, one with respect to another, lead to quantitative evaluations of these parameters for the scale model. The extent to which these parameters apply to the full-scale apparatus at faster flow velocities suggest that the general principles employed in the scale model are valid, although more emphasis is placed upon turbulence generation at the low flow velocities employed in this experiment than at the faster flow velocities employed in the full-scale apparatus.

Laminar mixing of high-viscous fluids by a cylindrical chaotic mixer
Laminar mixing of glycerin in a chaotic mixer is carried by means of the blob deformation method. The mixer was a cylindrical vessel with two rotational blades which move along two different circular paths with a stepwise motion protocol. The flow visualization was performed by marking of the free surface of the flow with a tracer. The effects of controlling parameters such as rotational speed ...
متن کاملNumerical Study on Low Reynolds Mixing ofT-Shaped Micro-Mixers with Obstacles
Micromixers are one of the most crucial components of Lab-On-a-Chip devices with the intention of mixing and dispersion of reagents like small molecules and particles. The challenge facing micromixers is typically insufficient mixing efficiency in basic designs, which results in longer microchannels. Therefore, it is desirable to increase mixing efficiency, in order to decrease mixing length, w...
متن کاملRapid mixing of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in a three-dimensional micro-mixer using non-uniform magnetic field
The mixing of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in a magnetic micro-mixer was studied numerically using ferrofluid. The mixing process was performed in a three-dimensional steady-state micro-mixer. A magnetic source was mounted at the entrance of the micro-channel to oscillate the magnetic particles. The effects of electric current, inlet velocity, size of magnetic particles, and non-Newtonia...
متن کاملInvestigation of electrokinetic mixing in 3D non-homogenous microchannels
A numerical study of 3D electrokinetic flows through micromixers was performed. The micromixers considered here consisted of heterogeneous rectangular microchannels with prescribed patterns of zeta-potential at their walls. Numerical simulation of electroosmotic flows within heterogeneous channels requires solution of the Navier-Stokes, Ernest-Plank and species concentration equations. It is kn...
متن کاملA technique for evaluating expired air mixing devices.
A simple method for measuring the efficiency of expired air mixing devices is described. Preliminary studies comparing a number of mixing chambers indicate that the bag-inbottle system is the most efficient. The dependence of mixing efficiency on VT, f and expired flow rate is demonstrated. Two types of mixing failure are distinguished. The clinical implications are discussed, including those r...
